" In 1640,1 one of the largest synagogues in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was erected in Piƒsk.2 It is possible that it was damaged during the chaos of the second half of the 17th and the beginning of the 18th centuries. What is certain is that the rebuilding in the first half of the 18th century effected changed in its mass. The synagogue consisted of a tall, main hall with a semi-circular tower attached to the north-west corner, containing a spiral staircase leading to the attic. Much smaller structures surrounded the hall on three sides – on the west side a vestibule from which corner-rooms were accessible, on the south and north sides, women’s prayer rooms with entrances directly from outside. Two storeys were constructed above part of the vestibule and the south-west room, in all probability added later."@en
